Treatment of tinea faciei. Tinea faciei is usually treated with topical antifungal agents, but if the treatment is unsuccessful, oral antifungal medicines may be considered, including terbinafine and itraconazole. In recent years, antifungal drug resistance has made treatment more challenging.
The first-line therapy for T. faciei is griseofulvin 20 mg/kg for 6–8 weeks (Gupta, Cooper, & Bowen, 2008). Fungal cultures or direct examination should be performed before steroid application in facial lesions in order to distinguish eczema from dermatophytosis and avoid misdiagnosis.
Tinea capitis (scalp) and onychomycosis (nail fungus) usually need to be treated with prescription medications taken by mouth. These medications need to be taken for several weeks to months. Examples include griseofulvin, terbinafine, fluconazole and itraconazole. A medicated shampoo is also recommended for tinea capitis
