Regarding erasers and the history of objects (“Erasing History” by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich in the May 2009 Perspectives on History), I recommend engineer-historian Henry Petroski’s The Pencil: A History of Design and Circumstance (1989), which includes a few pages of information about pencil erasers.

However, it is often forgotten that before the invention of a wood cased pencil with an attached eraser in 1858 by Hymen Lipman, things were not done quite as easily. The earliest form of a pencil was much closer to a paintbrush than the modern day interpretation.
There are now entire web sites devoted to erasers, mechanical pencils, and all sorts of typewriting memorabilia. Museums, too, have discovered the potential of such ordinary objects to evoke forms of work erased by the digital revolution.
