Regardless of their legal status, states must protect all migrants’ safety, dignity and well-being and make sure they have access to essential services.
Some people move in search of greener pastures, to find livelihood, to seek safety, for education, in search of employment, join family, for trade, to engage in business, or for sheer survival. Others move to escape from conflict, wars, violence, or persecution.
Roughly half of the world’s migrants have moved from developing to developed countries, where immigration is a key driver of population growth. From 2000 to 2014, immigrants contributed 40 to 80 percent of labor force growth in major destination countries. Workers moving to higher-productivity settings boosts global GDP.
