3 Νοε 2023 · Peripheral nervous system. The peripheral nervous system consists of 12 pairs of cranial nerves, 31 pairs of spinal nerves, and all their branches. Spinal nerves originate from spinal cord segments and innervate the body. Cranial nerves originate from the brainstem, predominantly innervating the head and neck region.
The central nervous system (CNS) is the brain and spinal cord, and the peripheral nervous system (PNS) is everything else (Figure 12.2). The brain is contained within the cranial cavity of the skull, and the spinal cord is contained within the vertebral cavity of the vertebral column.
