Nursing values are what many call the moral knowledge that promotes ethical behaviors and attitudes of nurses. They are essential for providing quality patient care and developing strong interprofessional and nurse-patient relationships.
The nursing profession is guided by a code of ethics. As you practice nursing, how will you determine “right” from “wrong” actions? What is the difference between morality, values, and ethical principles? What additional considerations impact your ethical decision-making?
Professional values are associated with individuals’ beliefs, as members of a profession, about the appropriateness and desirability of something [2]. Moreover, values are crucial factors of what motivates and rewards nurses [3]. Professional values often lead to development of the personal values [4].
The three fundamental professional nursing values of human dignity, equality among patients, and prevention of suffering, were rated first.
Today, nurses are required to have knowledge and awareness concerning professional values as standards to provide safe and high-quality ethical care. Nurses’ perspective on professional values affects decision-making and patient care.
The participants were 323 Israeli nurses, who were asked about 36 personal values and 20 professional values. The three fundamental professional nursing values of human dignity, equality among patients, and prevention of suffering, were rated first.
