Read through some of the following sample statements of teaching philosophies, (or extracts from statements). Please note that these examples are not chosen for their excellence, but to show you a range of choices of styles, structures and possible content in teaching philosophy statements.
To accurately appraise philosophy of education’s decline in teacher education and understand its causes, we must revisit this history and see why early teacher educators assigned philosophy such a central place in “modern” teacher education.
While reading the sample philosophies and constructing your own, consider these reflective questions. Try to observe or recollect specific examples that support your thinking. • What does teaching look like? What purpose does it serve? • How is education defined, and what is its purpose? • What makes learning valuable?
