  3. This chapter offers an overview of the consonants of Spanish, focusing on the main phonemes, both in terms of the dialectal variation and phonological processes that affect them. The topic of Spanish consonants is vast and has given rise to many studies from different perspectives, from generative phonology to Optimality Theory approaches.

  4. The goal of phonetics is to seek a comprehensive description of classes of sounds and of the general mechanisms of speech production caused by the respiratory system as air passes in and out of the lungs through some form of obstruction (within the mouth, pharynx, and larynx).
