List the various types of friction. Calculate the magnitude of static and kinetic friction, and use these in problems involving Newton’s laws of motion. When a body is in motion, it has resistance because the body interacts with its surroundings. This resistance is a force of friction.
Three kinds of friction: • Static friction: acts to prevent motion, so points opposite to the direction the object would move in the absence of friction • Kinetic friction: appears when an object slides across a surface; points opposite to the direction of motion • Rolling friction: one surface rolling over another KJF §4.3, 5.5 3
Hospitals and doctor’s clinics commonly use artificial lubricants, such as gels, to reduce friction. The equations given for static and kinetic friction are empirical laws that describe the behavior of the forces of friction.
Friction is a force that opposes relative motion between systems in contact. One of the simpler characteristics of friction is that it is parallel to the contact surface between systems and always in a direction that opposes motion or attempted motion of the systems relative to each other.
On this page I put together a collection of friction problems to help you understand the concept of friction better. The required equations and background reading to solve these problems are given on the friction page and the equilibrium page. Problem # 1. A block of mass M = 10 kg is sitting on a surface inclined at angle θ = 45°.
friction refers to cases in which one surface moves relative to the other one, such as when a box slides across the floor, while static friction refers to cases in which the surfaces do not move relative to each other, such as when a person is pushing on a stationary heavy
