Created in 1972, less than a year before Picasso passed away, the artwork is a testament to his enduring engagement with the themes of existence and the inevitability of death.
4 Ιουλ 2023 · Picasso’s funeral, held on April 10, 1973, was a solemn occasion that brought together family, friends, and luminaries from the art world. The funeral took place in the village of Mougins, near Picasso’s final residence, where he had spent his last years immersed in creativity.
In that mirrored image he saw, with wide eyes, death. For this drawing he used chalks in the same blue, mauve, and black he had employed thirty years earlier in a still life with cow's skull, created after he had been stunned by the news of the death of his friend and countryman Julio Gonzalez.

5 Απρ 2023 · Picasso was stricken as he awakened and died in his bedroom, a member of the household said. At his side were the drawing crayons that he always took with him when he retired, so he could sketch during the night if he was unable to sleep. Paulo Picasso, the painter’s eldest son, arrived Sunday night.
