By Norman Friedman. Nearly all warships are multipurpose, but in retrospect cruisers have had a remarkable variety of roles, and the designation has covered an astonishingly wide range of ships. During World War II, the U.S. Navy had more than 100 cruisers—the most the service ever operated.
Cruisers, being smaller and more lightly armed than battleships were nonetheless much larger and more powerful than destroyers. Their purpose was to fight in the full spectrum of naval operations: shore bombardment in support of troop landings, ship-to-ship combat, and anti-aircraft warfare.
