Published in 1956, this book critiqued the dominant sociological paradigm of the time-structural- functionalism-and may well have contributed to its diminishing influence in the discipline. Coser revealed functionalism's conservative biases and its inability to capture the conflict, competition, and tension that charac- terize group life.
In terms of the history of social thought and the layout of this book, it is inter-esting to note that Coser (1956) was motivated to consider the functional conse-quences of conflict to address a deficiency in Talcott Parsons’s theory: “Parsons considers conflict primarily a ‘disease’”(p. 21).
Conflict Theory is defined as a perspective that highlights the inevitability of conflict within social groups due to the inherent differences in needs and interests, often exacerbated by power imbalances leading to social inequality and injustice.
