It is thought that Martinique is a corruption of the Taíno name for the island (Madiana / Madinina, meaning 'island of flowers', or Matinino, 'island of women'), as relayed to Christopher Columbus when he visited the island in 1502. [8] According to historian Sydney Daney, the island was called Jouanacaëra or Iouanacaera by the Caribs, which means 'the island of iguanas'.

This is a page on the history of the island of Martinique. The island was originally inhabited by Arawak and Carib peoples. Circa 130 AD, the first Arawaks are believed to have arrived from South America. In 295 A.D, an eruption of Mount Pelée resulted in the decimation of the island's population.
Every year on March 8th, the whole world celebrates women with the International Women's Day. Martinique was once called "Matinino or Madinina" by the Arawaks, which means "the island of women". They defined it as an island populated exclusively by women warriors.
The high presence of men in drag is a reference to the central role of women in Martinique's society and family structure. Towns throughout Martinique elect their own Carnival Queen, Mini-Queen, and Queen Mother.
