Enemies that a 3-5th level character meets will have between +3 and +6 to hit; a 5e troll (CR 5) has +7, with 3 attacks averaging ~10 damage. It should hit with 40% of those vs AC20. So, the fighter will take 12 damage per round, or the troll can grapple or shove him away and attack someone else.
Starting with 16 STR or DEX, Heavy is 16AC and Light is 15AC. At level 4 the ASI will bring Light up to 16AC, and by levels 6-8 (depending on if they are a fighter) the Light Armor will be 17AC, which means that the Heavy Armor user should get an armor upgrade at levels 4 and 6 to stay ahead. 30 Αυγ 2018 · It honestly depends. If you have a reliable way to get magical armor, such as if you're playing in AL, then I would say plate armor is better simply because you can upgrade to +3 plate armor and a +3 shield. That alone will give you an ac of 26, and there are ways to boost it further.
