The concepts of continental drift and seafloor spreading are united into a more encompassing theory known as plate tectonics. This far reaching theory has become the basis for viewing most geologic processes — mountain building, paleontology, volcanism, earthquakes, etc. USGS.

- Seafloor Spreading
• Seafloor spreading proposed that rising magma was forming new oceanic crust along the oceanic ridges and that old crust was destroyed at oceanic trenches. • The concept of seafloor spreading was combined with the earlier idea of continental drift to create the theory of plate tectonics. Scientists gradually amassed additional data that would
28 Απρ 2020 · This science lesson plan aims to teach 10th grade students about seafloor spreading through various classroom activities. Students will learn how seafloor spreading happens, how drill samples provided evidence of spreading, and the lines of evidence that support plate tectonics theory.
1. discuss the process of seafloor spreading; and 2. explain how the convection currents in the earth’s interior make the seafloor spread. 3. describe the three evidence that seafloor is continuously spreading.
29 Νοε 2023 · Seafloor spreading is a geologic process in which tectonic plates —large slabs of Earth's lithosphere —split apart from each other. Seafloor spreading and other tectonic activity processes are the result of mantle convection. Mantle convection is the slow, churning motion of Earth’s mantle.
Evidence from the Seafloor. The seafloor reveals valuable clues about processes such as plate tectonics. We are familiar with the wide diversity of landforms and geologic processes on the continents - but there is an equal diversity in the ocean basins.
Students create models which show the formation of new oceanic crust through seafloor spreading and its destruction in subduction zones. They incorporate the concept of magnetic polarity reversal evident in the seafloor, one of many important pieces of evidence supporting the theory of plate tectonics.
