Clopidogrel stops the platelets sticking together by blocking a substance called ADP from attaching to a receptor on their surface. This stops the platelets becoming ‘sticky’, reducing the risk of a blood clot forming and helping to prevent another heart attack or stroke.
Plavix is a medicine used to prevent problems caused by blood clots in adults who have: • recently had a myocardial infarction (heart attack). Plavix can be started between a few days and 35 days after the attack; • recently had an ischaemic stroke (stroke caused by failure of the blood supply to part of the brain).
The above-mentioned safety concern was added in the Clopidogrel RMP v5.1 to align with the list of safety concerns of originator Plavix RMP v2.6, published in European Medicines Agency (EMA) European public assessment report (EPAR) website on 1 December 2023.
Mechanism of action. Clopidogrel is activated via a 2 steps reaction to an active thiol-containing metabolite. 3 This active form is a platelet inhibitor that irreversibly binds to P2Y 12 ADP receptors on platelets. 9 This binding prevents ADP binding to P2Y 12 receptors, activation of the glycoprotein GPIIb/IIIa complex, and platelet ...
10 Ιουλ 2023 · Explain the mechanism of action of clopidogrel. Review the indications for initiating therapy with clopidogrel. Describe the significant drug-drug interactions that might occur when prescribing clopidogrel.
Clopidogrel is an inhibitor of platelet aggregation, indicated for the prevention of ischemic stroke and in-stent thrombosis. However, it has a number of drawbacks, including an increased risk of hemorrhage; a clinical effect that is slow in onset ...
26 Ιουλ 2021 · We investigated benefits and risks of antiplatelet treatment for 4 different scenarios that we considered most relevant for clinical practice: (1) aspirin monotherapy, (2) enhanced dual antiplatelet therapy (aspirin-clopidogrel) versus monotherapy to assess if a specific subgroup might benefit from long-term dual therapy, (3) aspirin ...
