American Dad doesn't rely on reference humour nearly as much as Family Guy, who treats it like a crutch in either their main jokes or cutaways. Plus, when it comes to the characters, AD writers haven't allowed the Smiths to become stagnated and flanderised like what has happened to the Griffins.
Short answer for me is that FamilyGuy has punchier and more abstract humor that includes cutaways. AmericanDad has more developed characters that haven't been flanderized more than the namesake character Ned Flanders. American Dad has a lot of pacing issues that Family Guy doesn't. Steve's overdramatic behavior can be grating at times.

Many have preconceptions about American Dad! couched in their established bias towards Family Guy, and thus won’t even entertain the question. Well, it’s time to cast off that prejudice.
Who would win: Family Guy vs American Dad Round 1: family fight, no weapons just hand to hand. Round 2: same family fight but with weapons and evil Stewie and Rogers powers.
