Mary Ann Nichols, known as Polly Nichols (née Walker; 26 August 1845 – 31 August 1888), was the first canonical victim of the unidentified serial killer known as Jack the Ripper, who is believed to have murdered and mutilated at least five women in and around the Whitechapel district of London from late August to early November 1888.

Mary Ann Monk, arrived and recognized the body in the morgue as Mary Ann Nichols, who had lived in that workhouse months earlier. Word of the murder got around Whitechapel, and Ellen Holland soon came from the lodge house at 18 Thrawl Street as well to confirm that the victim was, indeed, Polly.
Polly Nichols' body is identified by Lambeth Workhouse inmate Mary Ann Monk and the identification confirmed by William Nichols. An inventory of her clothes is taken by Inspector John Spratling at the mortuary.
