Worksheet - Exp 2: Vector Addition Part 1. Objective: The objective of this lab is to add vectors using the graphical (head-to-tail) method and to verify the results using the component method. You will need both a ruler and proctrator to complete this worksheet.
One method for adding vectors involves manipulating their graphical representations on paper. To do so, you need a ruler to measure and draw the vectors to the correct length, and a protractor to measure the angle that establishes the direction. The length of the arrow should be propor-
Using the Graphical Method of Vector Addition and Subtraction to Solve Physics Problems . Now that we have the skills to work with vectors in two dimensions, we can apply vector addition to graphically determine the resultant vector, which represents the total force.
Just draw the vectors one by one, with the tail of each vector at the head of the previous one. The sum of all the vectors is then found by drawing a vector from the tail of the first vector in the chain to the head of the last one (Fig. 9.2.1 9.2. 1 (c)). This is called the polygon method.
The three main methods for adding vectors are the polygon method, the parallelogram method and vector addition using its components. Here, we will look at some examples with answers and practice problems for the topic of vector addition.
Vector Addition Practice: To find the sum of two vectors, find the first vector in the row and the second vector in the column and go the entry in the table. The first entry in the table is the magnitude of the sum and the second entry is the direction of the sum.
For the analytical method of vector addition and subtraction, we use some simple geometry and trigonometry, instead of using a ruler and protractor as we did for graphical methods. However, the graphical method will still come in handy to visualize the problem by drawing vectors using the head-to-tail method.
