This study utilizes nearly 5000 stem-mapped trees in ponderosa pine ( Pinus ponderosa Lawson & C. Lawson) dominated forests to evaluate several algorithms for detecting individual tree locations and characterizing crown area across tree sizes.
Ponderosa pine stands have been managed to provide a wide range of outputs and values by using these silvicultural systems, including timber, habitat for large game and avian species, protection of wildland resources from damaging insects, disease, or wildfire, quality forage for domestic ungulates, and water.
