In one of the exhibit catalogs I recognized Ignatius in a large painting and learned that Gregory XV was Guercino’s patron and the pope who canonized Ignatius and Xavier. Since then, I’ve been gathering additional information on this first Jesuit-educated pope. Here is some of what I’ve discovered.
