Olive Oyl is a character created by Elzie Crisler Segar in 1919 for his comic strip Thimble Theatre, eventually renamed after Popeye following the sailor's introduction and popularization.
Popeye made his film debut in Popeye the Sailor, a 1933 Betty Boop cartoon. Although Betty has a small cameo appearance, the cartoon mostly introduces the main characters: Popeye's coming to rescue Olive Oyl after being kidnapped by Bluto.
