It has been nearly 2000 years since the Roman emperor Nero kicked his pregnant and sick wife, Poppaea Sabina (hereafter Poppaea), killing her and what was probably the near full term fetus she was carrying.

17 Αυγ 2021 · According to the Roman historian Tacitus, in AD 65 Poppaea Sabina was killed by her husband, Emperor Nero, who had lost his temper with her. She was heavily pregnant and a kick in the belly was enough to end her life.
According to the stories told of her, Poppaea had urged Nero to kill his mother, Agrippina the Younger, and to divorce and later murder his first wife, Octavia. She is also reported to have persuaded Nero to kill the philosopher Seneca , who had supported Nero's previous mistress, Acte Claudia.
The opera is ringed by twinned scenes of domestic violence committed against Poppaea by her husband; it closes with a pointed look at Nero’s continued violent control of her body and her legacy after her death.
After Poppaea’s death, Nero went off the deep end. He promptly decided to kill his deceased wife's son from her first marriage, Rufus Crispinus the Younger, for the crime of playing general/emperor with his pals.
