Porcine necrotic ear syndrome (PNES) in pigs has been reported as an increasing health problem in many countries with intensive pig farming. The etiology of this disease is complex and the presumed triggering factors can be divided into infectious and non-infectious agents.
1 Μαΐ 2021 · Porcine ear necrosis (PEN) is a condition that mainly occurs in intensive pig production systems and mostly affects piglets after weaning. The syndrome manifests itself with lesions on the pinna, which can heal or become more severe resulting in partial loss of the ear.

29 Σεπ 2023 · Porcine ear necrosis (PEN) is characterized by ulcerative lesions of the ear auricle. To investigate that problem, three farms with PEN in nursery pigs were included, and the study aim was to characterize PEN and the potential role of pathogens and mycotoxins.
23 Μαρ 2024 · In this study, we investigated possible association between PEN syndrome and pigs’ social behaviours. Social interactions can be a source of stress and a cause of ear lesions, or a source of social cohesion and support, depending on the type of interaction.
The causes of necrotic ear syndrome have not been determined conclusively. Three hypothesis are currently considered: 1) damage of the epidermis due to Staphylococcal exfoliative toxins; 2) occlusion of small blood vessels; and 3) ear biting with subsequent beta-hemolytic streptococcal infection.
The major causes of ear necrosis are circulatory disturbance and trauma (damage). Circulatory disturbance occurs during septicaemic infectious diseases. In erysipelas and salmonellosis, infected clots block the blood vessels to cause congestion of the ears, snout, tail and feet.
