Exercise ECG (exercise stress test) has a sensitivity of 40–50% and a specificity of around 85–90%. This means that exercise ECG will detect roughly 40–50% of all patients with coronary artery disease, while correctly classifying healthy patients as healthy in 85–90% of cases.
The treadmill and cycle ergometer (bicycle) are the most frequently used test methods. Cycle ergometer is preferred in Europe, while treadmill testing is predominant in the United States. Treadmill and cycle ergometer both have their advantages and disadvantages, which will be discussed below.
