Papillary muscle dysfunction or rupture is a rare but catastrophic consequence of acute myocardial infarction; the posterior papillary muscle is involved in about 75% of cases and the anterior in about 25%.
Summary: The two left ventricular (LV) papillary muscles are small structures but are vital to mitral valve competence. Partial or complete rupture, complicating acute myocardial infarction, causes severe or even catastrophic mitral regurgi- tation, potentially correctable by surgery.

To characterize morphologic variations in the papillary muscles and tendinous cords of the left ventricle and ventricular zones of the mitral valve leaflets. A total of 100 autopsied human hearts from healthy donors with classical mitral valve type were investigated.
1 Σεπ 2023 · In left ventricle, one anterior (46%) and two posterior papillary muscles (26%) were most common. In both the ventricles, commonly observed gross appearances of papillary muscles were conical and flat-topped. Papillary muscles were lengthier in left ventricle than right ventricle.
24 Ιουλ 2023 · Structure and Function. The papillary muscles arise from the walls of the left and right cardiac ventricles. The classic description of the left cardiac ventricle is as containing two papillary muscles: the anterolateral and posteromedial. The anterolateral arises from the sternocostal wall, and the posteromedial papillary muscle arises from ...
Therefore, we adopted posterior papillary muscle suspension, a subvalvular proce-dure for functional mitral regurgitation, to treat systolic anterior motion without directly intervening in the mitral valve leaflets.
