According to Mojang, they nerfed the amount of diamonds that spawn in each vein found in caves (I get around 1-3). Whilst strip mining can have the normal 1-8 veins. Any vein of diamonds that is visible in a cave will have a maximum of 3-4. I recommend getting fortune and exploring massive caves.
