22 Μαρ 2018 · There are two main modes from which to approach prayer through art: meditating on art as a starting point for prayer and creating art as an expression of prayer. While they are in some ways opposites, they both use visual means to engage in and nurture prayer, reflection, and meditation.
In seeking God’s guidance, we invite a deeper connection to our creative potential and the limitless possibilities of artistic expression by saying a prayer about art and activity. May these prayers inspire us to embrace the divine within us and unleash our creative spirits.
Prayer #1. Dear God, I come before you as an artist, seeking your divine inspiration. Fill my mind with creativity and open my heart to receive your guidance. Help me see the beauty in every brushstroke, the melody in every note, and the story in every word.
Images are a powerful tool to communicate truths and stir emotions, often evoking deeper responses than words can contain. Prayerful reflection on art and scripture is one practice we may use to encounter God, to structure our dialog with God (prayer), and to deepen our relationship with God.
29 Μαρ 2016 · Praying with Art. Art can be a wonderful way of communicating (both listening and sharing) with God beyond words. It is not about creating masterpieces, but about allowing patterns to emerge that can offer you new insights and be turned into prayer.
Bless all who create in your image, O God of creation. Pour your Spirit upon them that their hearts may sing and their works be fulfilling. Amen.
Praying with religious art or icons is an ancient prayer practice that involves keeping our eyes wide open, taking into our heart what the image visually communicates. We focus not on what is seen in the icon or piece of art, but rather on what is seen through it — the love of God expressed through God’s creatures.
