In 1930 the first paper was made. Unfortunately, the mill did not thrive, due in part to the Great Depression, and it was sold at auction in late 1933. While in operation, the mill provided Hunter with enough handmade paper for many of his later limited edition books. The “Dog and Dagger” watermark
The Arches paper mill is now the only one in France to manufacture all its fine art and printing papers using cylinder moulds. The cylinder mould process combined with the use of a natural raw material – cotton – produces very high quality paper that is as good as the finest handmade papers.

16 Οκτ 2024 · From its inception as a paper mill, Hayle Mill continued to produce fine paper for generations. Its product grades included security, currency, writing, printing, drawing, and conservation papers.
Sheets are mouldmade, 100% cotton, neutral pH, internally and tub sized with gelatin, air dried and with two natural deckle edges. To watch a short film of paper making at Hayle Mill shot in 1976 click HERE. These papers are from the Brixton studio of the artist Leonard McComb RA.
The Kämmerer brothers had already decided, upon taking over the paper mill, that its line of production should undergo a radical transformation. They realised that production of the mill’s existing products was neither forward-looking nor likely to deliver any upturn in fortunes.
