The review shows that in order to achieve good teaching, good subject knowledge is a prerequisite. Also, the skilful use of well-chosen questions to engage and challenge learners, and to consolidate understanding, is an important feature, as is the effective use of assessment for learning.
These twelve principles are intended as guidelines to faculty and administrators interested in the improvement of teaching and learning. The list is derived, in part, from a study co-sponsored by the American Association for Higher Education and the Education Commission of the States (AAHE Bulletin, March 1987).
