If you purchase a vehicle from another person instead of a dealer, it is known as a private party purchase. Buyers have 10 days after purchasing the vehicle to transfer ownership from the seller to themselves, and sellers have 5 days after the sale to report the transfer of ownership to DMV.

But if you bought the car from a private party, you will need to apply for a title in your name by going in person to a DMV office with the following: California Certificate of Title OR Application for Duplicate Title (REG 227), signed by the buyer, seller, and lienholder (if any)
In the state of California, it is required that you have a completed bill of sale before you register the vehicle. So you’ll need to bring a copy of your car’s bill of sale to the DMV when you go. You will also need to have your bill of sale in order to have the title of the car transferred.
