With a Gestalt approach, two main questions have to be considered to understand the process of problem solving: 1) How is a problem represented in a person’s mind?, and 2) How does solving this problem involve a reorganization or restructuring of this representation?
Abstract. Problem solving research is in need for re-thinking main questions. The purpose of this paper is a stock-taking of some of the identified problems, to discuss potential remedies for them, and to look for future perspectives.

Furthermore, it pursues the problematic situations and circumstances that accompany the particular problem and appear during its solving. The main part of this article is an analysis of the problem solving process itself.
Various methods of studying problem solving exist within the field of psychology including introspection, behavior analysis and behaviorism, simulation, computer modeling, and experimentation. A problem-solving strategy is a plan of action used to find a solution.
Problem solving does not usually begin with a clear statement of the problem; rather, most problems must be identified in the environment; then they must be defined and represented mentally. The focus of this chapter is on these early stages of problem solving: problem recognition, problem definition, and problem representation.
The Psychology of Problem Solving is divided into four parts. Fol-lowing an introduction that reviews the nature of problems and the history and methods of the field, Part II focuses on individual differ-ences in, and the influence of, the abilities and skills that humans bring to problem situations.
