Define amplitude, frequency, period, wavelength, and velocity of a wave; Relate wave frequency, period, wavelength, and velocity; Solve problems involving wave properties
Properties of waves. A wave (Figure 2) is a periodic perturbation from an undisturbed or rest state that is transmitted in space. The maximum deviation from this undisturbed state is called the amplitude of the wave, and is a measure of the intensity of the perturbation; the top of the wave is called a crest and the lowest state, a trough.
A diagram of the electromagnetic spectrum, showing various properties across the range of frequencies and wavelengths. The electromagnetic spectrum is the full range of electromagnetic radiation, organized by frequency or wavelength. The spectrum is divided into separate bands, with different names for the electromagnetic waves within each band.
11 Ιαν 2024 · period (or frequency) – The period of the wave is determined by how long it takes the wave's generator to complete a full cycle. The wave's frequency will exactly mimic the frequency at which it is driven. wavelength – The length of a wave is determined by a combination of its frequency and wave speed.
[BL] Review wave properties: frequency, wavelength, and amplitude. Ask students to recall sound and water waves, and explain how they relate to these properties. [OL] Explain that an important difference between EM waves and other waves is that they can travel across empty space.
All electromagnetic waves have the following properties in common: They are all transverse waves. They can all travel in a vacuum. They all travel at the same speed in a vacuum (free space) — the speed of light 3 × 108 ms-1. The speed of light in air is approximately the same. Oscillating electric and magnetic fields in an electromagnetic wave.
A wave’s frequency can be measured by how many crests (or how many troughs) pass a location in a certain amount of time. A wave with a larger frequency has more energy. If a wave’s frequency doubles, its energy also doubles. A wave’s energy is proportional to the square of its amplitude.
