Protozoa are microscopic unicellular eukaryotes that have a relatively complex internal structure and carry out complex metabolic activities. Some protozoa have structures for propulsion or other types of movement. Classification. On the basis of light and electron microscopic morphology, the protozoa are currently classified into six phyla.
Protozoa are mostly single-celled, animal-like organisms. Although some are colonial or form loose aggregations, most live and function as separate cellular individuals. Most protozoa are chemoheterotrophs, i.e., organisms using preformed organic compounds for both energy and carbon.
