Proxima Centauri is the nearest star to Earth after the Sun, located 4.25 light-years away in the southern constellation of Centaurus. This object was discovered in 1915 by Robert Innes. It is a small, low-mass star, too faint to be seen with the naked eye, with an apparent magnitude of 11.13. Its Latin name means the 'nearest [star] of Centaurus'.
12 Νοε 2024 · Proxima Centauri is the closest star to the Sun, about 4.2 light-years away in the Alpha Centauri system. As a red dwarf star—the most common type of star—Proxima Centauri is about seven times smaller than the Sun and a little more than half as hot, at 3,100 kelvins .
27 Οκτ 2023 · It orbits at about 1.5 times the distance from its star than Earth orbits from the sun. Then in 2022, the discovery of a third planet candidate orbiting Proxima Centauri was announced.
So, in miles, Proxima Centauri is a staggering 24.9 trillion miles away from the Sun. That’s a 24 with 12 zeros after it! To visualize this enormous distance, let’s make some comparisons. Imagine you could build a highway from the Sun to Proxima Centauri.
8 Δεκ 2020 · Of the three stars in the system, the dimmest - called Proxima Centauri - is actually the nearest star to the Sun. The two bright stars, called Alpha Centauri A and B form a close binary system; they are separated by only 23 times the Earth - Sun distance.
The closest star, Proxima Centauri, is 4.24 light-years away. A light-year is 9.44 trillion km, or 5.88 trillion miles. That is an incredibly large distance. Walking to Proxima Centauri would take 950 million years. If you turned it up and went as fast as Apollo 11 went to the Moon, it would still take 43,000 years. So how can we measure such a ...
The closest star to the sun is Proxima Centauri, but its brighter neighbor Alpha Centauri, a double star, is so nearly the same distance that data about it are usually given. It is about 4 light years distance, or about 3.8x10 16 m.
