If it is available, you have to sign up for a plan with a card. You then get the first 7 days free, and then it will charge your card if you don’t cancel. You also can’t share plus benefits with other accounts on the console during a trial.
an offer for a free trial of the Essential tier is almost useless if you already own any tier of PS Plus, but a free trial to either Extra or Premium is useful to people who aren’t subscribed and people who are subscribed to either Essential or Extra.

Most of the time there is no free trial. Occasionally, for just a few weeks, a free trial may pop up in your region. I actually got the 7 day free trial in November. But it's gone now, even if I make a new account.
