Psalm 139 is one of the grandest of all the Psalms, for it brings us face to face with the majesty and power of God. Immediately it exalts God as all knowing and omnipresent, and clearly shows that all of man's life is in God's hands.
There are three key ideas set forth in the psalm. The first is God's intimate knowledge of the psalmist (Psalm 139:1,2,4,6,14,23 (twice)). Second, God searches man's ways as a judge scrutinizes evidence that is brought into court (Psalm 139:1,3,23-24).
Bible. This God who is omniscient (vs. 1-6), omnipresent (vs.7-12), omnipotent (vs. 13-18) and omni-compotent (vs. 19-24) has fearfully and wonderfully made us (v. 14), fashioning all our days before we were even formed in our mother’s womb (v.16). 2) Psalm 139 was penned by King David.
(Psalm 139:1-6) The all-knowing God knows me. O LORD, You have searched me and known me. You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off. You comprehend my path and my lying down, And are acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word on my tongue, But behold, O LORD, You know it altogether.
Psalm 139 Introduction: 1) Whenever I teach Bible interpretation I always encourage my students to ask two very important questions of the passage they are studying: 1) What does this text teach us about God? 2) What does this text teach us about humanity? When those two questions are applied to Psalm 139 the simple answer is, “a lot!”
What does Psalm chapter 139 mean? Psalm 139 begins by expressing the infinite knowledge of God. This attribute is also referred to as omniscience. This extends to everything a person does, thinks, and says, even before those actions occur. As stated elsewhere in the Bible, God's mind is inexpressibly beyond that of any person (Isaiah 55:8–9).
This Psalm teaches the believer, not to be silent about his or her anxieties and pain. In the end, the author prays: “lead me in the way everlasting,” which is equal to: “walk with the Lord” and to: “live in communion with God (Jn 17:3).
