The Bureau of Land Management – New Mexico (BLM) and the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish (NMDGF) partnered to offer free maps of Big Game hunting units and recreational opportunities on public land using the CarryMap application. (See the 2021 BLM Hunting Recreation Maps Handout).
Some Barbary sheep are also found on the few checkerboarded parcels of public land but a bit of luck is required to locate them. Hunters who focus on this area should explore options near the Canadian River Canyon or Mills Canyon.

26 Φεβ 2019 · My destination was New Mexico, where I eagerly anticipated my Aoudad (Barbary Sheep) hunt. Hunting free-range Aoudad on public land is challenging, and information on it is scarce. Though I prepared to the best of my ability, my expectations of filling a tag were modest at best.
Public Land. View fullsize. Barbary sheep hunting is yet another hunt that offers the true "mountain hunting" experience. Barbary sheep, or Aoudad, have amazing eye sight, and an uncanny ability to vanish. This makes for a fun filled hunt.
Barbary sheep, also known as aoudad, are almost extinct in much of their native range in north Africa, but thrive in parts of New Mexico, where they were introduced in the 1940s. Hunting barbary sheep is challenging and rewarding as they blend into their surroundings well.
