25 Σεπ 2023 · The number of students with autism in Puerto Rico has doubled over the last decade, reaching 7,575 in 2022, according to the Autism Alliance of Puerto Rico. However, there is an island-wide shortage of special education teachers and therapists.
The present study is a needs assessment of the population with ASDs living in Puerto Rico and will provide baseline data for the development and implementation of a public policy for ASDs and for the Puerto Rico Autism Registry.
Since 2014, STAR Autism Support trainers have been making the trip down to Puerto Rico for the privilege of participating in the Puerto Rico Autism Project. The project addresses the educational needs of students with significant learning challenges, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
In June 2014 the Puerto Rico Department of Education, along with Bayamon Preschool, conducted a training for a select group of staff on implementing evidence-based practices for students with autism and other developmental disabilities.
