Bidong Island (Malay: Pulau Bidong, Terengganuan Pula Bidong) is an island 260 ha (640 acres) in area [1] in Kuala Nerus District, Terengganu, Malaysia in the South China Sea. Bidong Island is accessible from the coastal town of Merang in Setiu district.
Visitors to Bidong Island can partake in various water activities, such as snorkeling and diving, immersing themselves in the vibrant marine life in crystal-clear waters. Visitors can also go hiking, rewarding them with breathtaking views of nearby islands from the peak.
Pulau Bidong is a deserted island, there are no settlers nor any resorts operating here. However, what’s left here are remnants of a hospital, a school, shops and hostel like accommodation for the refugees.

Pulau Bidong Island. The Pulau Bidong island is in the northeast of Kuala Terengganu city and Merang town. To get to the island, it takes about 40 – 50 minutes by boat. In 1978, Malaysian Government and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) started to use Bidong to house the refugees instead a location on the mainland.
