The Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST) finds regions of local similarity between protein or nucleotide sequences. The program compares nucleotide or protein sequences to sequence in a database and calculates the statistical significance of the matches.
BLAST is NCBI’s Basic Local Alignment Search Tool. A gene(s) or protein(s) can be aligned to a genome, collection of genes or collection of proteins. There are four BLAST programs.
This document first introduces the BLAST databases available from NCBI (in Section 2). The actual guide (Section 3) divides BLAST searches into several categories according to the nature and size of the input query and the primary goal of the search.
