A “purple state” features roughly even numbers of Democratic and Republican supporters in a presidential election. It’s also a term used for a swing state on an electoral map. It is purple because it could either go blue or red. Purple states are sometimes shown as gray on a map instead of purple.
A purple state refers to a swing state where both Democratic and Republican candidates receive many votes without an overwhelming majority for either party. Purple states are also often referred to as "battleground" states.
