Purple States of America. In the United States, no state ever votes 100% Democratic (blue) or 100% Republican (red), and yet this is how we are accustomed to seeing our electoral maps illustrated, despite a 2009 study showing that this can exacerbate polarization.

A purple state refers to a swing state where both Democratic and Republican candidates receive many votes without an overwhelming majority for either party. Purple states are also often referred to as "battleground" states.
