The ending was thrown together after they realized they were being cancelled and weren't going to get any additional episodes to do it. They figured better to throw a 5 minute ending in the last episode than to have no ending at all.

Bryan Fuller had plans for the "back nine" episodes of the second season, but then the series got cancelled; hence the montage at the end of the last episode (which replaced a cliffhanger).
Pushing Daisies is an American comedy-drama television series created by Bryan Fuller that aired on ABC from October 3, 2007, to June 13, 2009. The series stars Lee Pace as Ned, a pie-maker with the ability to bring dead things back to life with his touch, an ability that comes with stipulations.
Did they ever explain future story plans for Pushing Daisies? After rewatching the show again, I'm once again filled with burning questions, namely the mystery behind Ned's father, and why he left in the first place, and also why he came back. Before the show was canceled they had him in an episode and then didn't make mention of him again.
