Most of the defined terms are Italian (see also Italian musical terms used in English), in accordance with the Italian origins of many European musical conventions.
From basic terms like ‘melody’ and ‘rhythm’ to more complex ones like ‘negative harmony,’ we break things down in a way that’s easy to understand. Each term links to a guide that explains it further.

Quarter note: Another term for a quarter note, the musical note played for one-quarter of the duration of a whole note (or semibreve). Quarter tone: A musical interval half the size of a half step or semitone, common in some non-Western musical systems.
