Beyond electronic phenomena, ionic charge-transfer also yields new opportunities to tailor and functionalize the ionic properties of oxide interfaces: by forcing charge-transfer to take place primarily via exchange of ions from one side of the interface to the other, one may tailor the ionic conductivity along the interface (Fig. 1b).
In this paper, we propose a simple scheme to predict band alignment and charge transfer in complex oxide interfaces. For semiconductor heterostructures, band-alignment rules like the well-known Anderson or Schottky-Mott rule are based on comparison of the work function or electron affinity of the bulk components.
