Isabella II (Spanish: Isabel II, María Isabel Luisa de Borbón y Borbón-Dos Sicilias; 10 October 1830 – 9 April 1904) was Queen of Spain from 1833 until her deposition in 1868. She is the only queen regnant in the history of unified Spain.
Estatua Isabel II is a monument to a Queen who ruled for from 1833 to 1868. She was 3 years old when she succeeded her father, so for a fair chunk of her reign she ruled in name only. Later on she took over for real, but her rule ended with what is known as the Glorious Revolution, when she was forced to abdicate and fled into exile.
Designed by Mariano Benlliure, it consists of a bronze sculptural group depicting a meeting of Isabella I of Castile with Christopher Columbus. A nearly 50 metre high triumphal arch, an earlier bombastic project by Justo de Gandarias [es] discarded because of budget shortcomings.
