About 500 examples of quipus are known today, in public and private collections. The colors of the textiles, the direction of the knots, the spacing and type of knots, and the length of the textiles are all believed to contain information—from census data, accounting information, even to recording poetry.
A Quipu is a series of strings and knots said to communicate and contain the history of a people. The word is used here as a metaphor for a lost time, lands, and peoples.
They must have had some form of record-keeping, perhaps something as simple as having a counting bin where one potato was represented a bag of potatoes, but no quipu. So quipu aren't the only thing for record-keeping, and quipu are complex and able to encode a great deal of information.
