How do Rainbow lorikeets find food? Rainbow lorikeets forage food from the canopies of trees and bushes as well as low-lying shrubberies. They’re pretty nimble and will hang on small branches, spooning pollen and nectar from flowers with their specialised tongues.
Rainbow lorikeets are herbivores (frugivores, palynivores, nectarivores) and feed mainly on fruit, pollen, and nectar from flowers. Some species of lorikeet (such as the Rainbow Lorikeet) have a tongue that is adapted to enable them to more easily feed on this pollen and nectar diet.
Diet. What does the Rainbow Lorikeet eat? Rainbow lorikeet’s primarily feed on nectar and pollen which they gather from shrubs and trees. To supplement this they also eat fruits, seeds and the occasional insect. They regularly frequent bird feeders to get food and will also accept food out of a humans hand.
Food should be replaced daily (ideally twice a day) to prevent lorikeets from eating spoiled food and/or prevent harmful bacteria from growing. Fresh clean water must be available always. Wash food and water dishes daily in hot, soapy water and rinsed thoroughly.
Rainbow lorikeets that live in the wild have a specific diet of nectar and pollen from native flowers such as bottlebrush and grevilleas (their favorite food), but they also eat sap, fruit, and some seeds.
