3 Μαρ 2024 · Unlike the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway’s 3000 class, Virginian Railway’s class AE locomotives enjoyed greater success during their run that spanned upwards of three decades. The 3000 class locomotives were eventually returned by the AT&SF Railway to their original 2-10-2 configuration.

They were built out of existing 900 & 1600 class 2-10-2s with new front engines and tenders from Baldwin.
Built to be the super heavy haulers of its day from converted 2-10-2s in 1911 they were a dismal failure and quietly rebuilt back to standard locomotives in 1915. Although they did hold the record for world's largest engine for 3 years after they were convinced.

Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe 2-10-2 "Santa Fe" Locomotives in the USA. The Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad bought a pair of "Decapod" type locomotives for use as pushers on the Raton Pass over the mountains to and from California. These locomotives did a good job of ascending the steep grade.
