In their 40-year review of PRT, Miron and Brehm (2006) reemphasized reactance’s motivational qualities: “Because reactance is a motivational state, it possesses energizing properties that drive individuals to engage in freedom-restoration behaviors” (p. 4). What factors affect perception of threats to freedom? And arousal of reactance?
We have attempted to examine reactance theory in all its complexity. and generativity. The fundamental tenets of the theory and research relevant to these tenets are discussed in considerable detail. Subse-quently, we examine a number of special topic areas to which the theory seems especially relevant.
